Expectations

Expecting things, any time from any one, will ultimately result in disappointment.  Maybe selfless living is the opposite of expectant living.  Therefore, when one lives selflessly they will not be disappointed.  How hard is this to do?  I find it very hard.  I find it hard not to expect things from others. If I do not expect anything from anyone, if I can find a way to do this.  What will life be like?  Full of surprises.  Wonder.  Full of "I wasn't expecting this!" statements.

Honestly though, I do not think it can be done.  I think we naturally expect certain things from certain people.  We naturally expect certain events to occur in our lives.  When our expectations aren't met, we get upset.

I want to believe that people act with care and love in their hearts.  But the past has taught me that, although we may have this, we may also need certain things for our own peace, and in turn someone may get inadvertently hurt.

I'm going to try my best not to expect a lot of things in life, but to be surprised by what I find on the other side of the figurative door.  After all I am no longer a door mat, but a shiny new welcome sign.
