My friends call me Alice. My name is really pronounced Uh-Lease. After Elyse from the hit hippie parents in Family Ties. Michael J. Fox won an Emmy, and I got a name. We all won. My first day of school is always a drag.
"Alice Meal? Alice Mealy? Alice --" Looks to me for advice.
"It's okay. I can't even pronounce my last name." My last name means honey in Italian. Ironically enough, I don't eat honey. I'm Vegan. My parents gave me the double whammy on my name. When I have a kid I'm going to name them the simplest most beautiful name possible.
A person's name is the most beautiful thing they can hear. It's also the scariest. There are certain situations when a person's name is used only for that situation. Emergencies, or emotional stressful situations that no one wants to deal with, but we all have to deal with etc. During those times, hearing your name might be the last thing you want to hear. Ultimately you are the last person who wants to be in the situation that you find yourself in.
Honestly though. People calling me Alice has been happening, probably ever since I was born, and will happen [nameless] for evermore. It's funny. My name is cool. Simple. Beautiful.
Life is dramatic. It goes without saying, but sometimes it needs to be said. We live life, searching each day, for something that may never come. Love, relief, support, friendship, opportunity, and stability just to name six. Are these things that we are all looking for? No. Will we be looking for them at some point? Absolutely. I was watching "Lock Down-Raw" last night on TLC or something, and an inmate who was convicted of murdering something like 7 people was being interviewed.
He was on death row. He said that it had always been his philosophy in life to make a home out of anywhere he went, he did this by being self aware and self confident. During the day to day life journey, no matter what it is that we might be searching for, it's important to keep in mind that individually we are the catalyst to which our journey takes place. The strength, the heart, the hope, the endurance, the bravery; we are so many things.
I am so many of these things. But I am not Alice.
